Veterinary Prescriptions

All medications recommended and prescribed by your vet can be provided here at Kelston Vets.

If you prefer, a written script can be provided for you to source the appropriate medication from an online veterinary pharmacy. Written prescriptions are required for POM-V category drugs (Prescription Only Medication – Veterinarian).

This ‘written prescription’ is specific to the pet and will state the medication name, strength and dosing instructions.

Most prescriptions will need to be drawn within 1 month of issue. However, for longer or repeat treatments the prescription may be valid for up to 6 months. The amount of medication and timeframe for the supply of that medication can vary depending on the type of drug and the condition it is being used for and will be determined by the prescribing veterinary surgeon.

In order to supply a written prescription for any POM-V product the pet will need to be seen by a vet for consultation and examination. This is a requirement of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) and is in place to ensure  the correct and safe use of pharmaceuticals in the veterinary industry. If subsequent or further prescriptions are required, then repeat veterinary examinations will also be necessary in order to issue a new script and to satisfy these ‘animal under our care’ requirements.

In order to complete the written prescription, we will need to know the chosen online pharmacy from which you will be purchasing from. We are unable to advise on which pharmacy to use. This is the responsibility and choice of the client.

A written prescription costs £30.00 and can be provided as a physical paper prescription or digital copy for you to submit to the online pharmacy as per their instructions.
